The frequency range of microwaves used in industrial applications is typically between 300 MHz and 300 GHz. The specific frequency used depends on the application and the material being treated. For example, lower frequencies can be used to dry wood or paper, while higher frequencies can be used to sterilise medical instruments or cook food. Microwave energy can penetrate materials and generate heat through a process called dielectric heating. This happens when microwaves cause molecules in the material to vibrate and generate heat. The depth of penetration and the amount of heat generated depend on the frequency of the microwaves and the electrical properties of the material.
